Pitt Pediatrics congratulates Katharina Hayes, MD, John Szymusiak, MD, MS, and Andrew McCormick, MD, FAAP, on their recent publication in the Journal of Hospital Medicine.
Titled “A clinical antiracism curriculum for third-year medical students to bring antiracist principles to the bedside”, the team’s publication focuses on making sure trainees are ‘exposed to curricula dedicated to DEI as illustrated by the Association of American Medical Colleges' recently released DEI Competencies Across the Curriculum.’
With this in mind, the team created and implemented a curriculum called Social Justice Rounds (SJR) which focuses on teaching these topics directly in inpatient clinical work. SJR are ‘brief team-based discussions facilitated by Pediatric Hospital Medicine faculty that focus on racism in medicine and other forms of discrimination experienced by patients’.
Students in these programs did pre- and post-clerkship surveys, which showed an increase in their frequency and comfort with talking about DEI issues and topics, both within their own teams and with patients.
“I think the positive results speak to all the hard work our division has done in working this important aspect of patient care into our daily work,” says Szymusiak.
